It is with sadness that I report the passing of English director Antonia Bird, who had been suffering from thyroid cancer. Sources differ as to whether she was born in 1951 or 1959, but either way, she is gone far too soon. I have not yet seen any of the four features she made in the 1990s – although Priest has been on my Netflix Instant queue for quite a while – so I will make time for her films as soon as possible. Female voices are all too few in the filmmaking world and the loss of one is always devastating.
Linus Roache and Tom Wilkinson in Priest (1994)
Chris O’Donnell and Drew Barrymore in Mad Love (1995)
Robert Carlyle in Face (1997)
Guy Pearce in Ravenous (1999)
