Ranking the Films of 2013

I didn’t see as many new films in 2013 as I would have liked, but anyway, here’s how I rank the ones I did get a chance to see.

  1. Nebraska – dir. Alexander Payne
  2. Gravity – dir. Alfonso Cuarón
  3. Pacific Rim – dir. Guillermo del Toro
  4. Austenland – dir. Jerusha Hess
  5. Stoker – dir. Chan-wook Park
  6. Side Effects – dir. Steven Soderbergh
  7. Parkland – dir. Peter Landesman
  8. The Great Gatsby – dir. Baz Luhrmann
  9. Inside Llewyn Davis – dirs. Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
  10. Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight – dir. Stephen Frears
  11. Iron Man 3 – dir. Shane Black
  12. The Company You Keep – dir. Robert Redford
  13. The Bling Ring – dir. Sofia Coppola
  14. Closed Circuit – dir. John Crowley
  15. All Is Lost – dir. J.C. Chandor
  16. Carrie – dir. Kimberly Peirce

Now that I’m finishing my final paper of the fall college term, I might have some time to see American Hustle, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Blue Jasmine (still haven’t seen it after five months of continuous screening at two Manhattan theaters… better get around to that), Dallas Buyers Club, Her, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Thor: The Dark World and 12 Years a Slave. Are there are any other films you would recommend or warn against?
